I was recently talking to Aaron Cherof, a wonderful composer who very recently got his big breaks as a composer. Just last year, he composed the soundtracks for the hugely successful indie game Cobalt Core, as well as a tiny game called Minecraft.
All it took him was just 12 years of non-stop effort.
That was 12 years of working a full-time job (that had nothing to do with audio) while freelancing part time and writing music whenever he could, working on whatever games would come up, and writing albums when he could. There never was never quite enough work coming in to go full-time in game audio... until suddenly, there was.
We absolutely never know when our big breaks will come, but I can practically guarantee that those breaks will take a lot longer than we think to arrive.
While it may take you less or more than 12 years, the only thing you can control is how long you stick to it.
So keep going.
P.S. If you'd like to listen to my full interview with Aaron, you can do that on my podcast right here!
